Leadership pathways
Different roles carry different responsibilities.
Openings and terms vary. The chapter can explain current needs, eligibility, selection processes, and the time required before you decide to pursue a role.
Board service
Set priorities, oversee resources, make decisions, and remain accountable to chapter members.
Committee chair
Guide a defined area of work, support volunteers, communicate progress, and coordinate with the board.
Chapter delegate
Learn the national process and represent Oregon members in AMTA’s delegate system.
Event or initiative lead
Take responsibility for a defined outcome with support, boundaries, and a clear timeline.
Emerging leadership
Begin through committee or project service while learning how the chapter operates.
Succession & mentorship
Help preserve institutional knowledge and prepare other members to lead well.
Before saying yes
Understand the authority, workload, and support.
Ask about term length, meetings, preparation, decision-making authority, fiduciary or policy responsibilities, travel, communication expectations, and what support is available.
Healthy leadership includes boundaries, documentation, handoffs, respectful disagreement, and the ability to name when capacity has changed.
